Gum Infection Is A Serious Public Concern

Gum disease is a serious public health concern in all parts of the globe. In the early stage of gum disease, the gums may be irritated, but the teeth are firmly attached in their sockets. However, untreated gingivitis can eventually advance to periodontitis. During the advanced stage of gum disease, the inner layer of the gum and bone pulls away from the teeth and pockets are formed. Food debris may be collected in the small spaces between teeth paving way for gum infection to occur. The body's immune system fights the bacteria as the plaque spreads and grows below the gum line. The toxins released by bacteria and the enzymes of the body fighting the gum infection actually begin to break down the bone and the connective tissue that holds the teeth in place. The pockets deepen and more gum tissue and bone are destroyed as the disease advances. Teeth may become looser because the support was lost and tooth loss will be the ultimate outcome.
